Intro
When I first saw the new Star Trek film, I was in a state of shock. I couldn't think straight without thinking back on how completely incredible the characters were, and I found myself lingering on the little things: the silence in space while chaos errupted around the Starfleet ships, the absolute horror of the monster that Nero had become. But something didn't quite set right...I wanted to know more, and especially about the intriguing half Vulcan officer, Mister Spock....so began a journey into what has become my favorite science fiction series, and into a character who I think a lot of us can identify with....

Plot Summary
Christine Chapel's world is turned upside down at a young age when a freak accident (that could have been prevented if things went as planned) ended up in the brutal death of her parents. From then onward she searches and strives for total and complete control of all the aspects of her life, and she seeks to help out those who need her. Eventually this search leads her on a journey that will rock the very foundations of her belief system, involving time traveling old men and young men who burrow infuriatingly deep into her heart. Where do her true loyalties lie? To her fiance, or to her ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise and the friends she has found while aboard during her five year tour? Will she end up miserable, or will the Prince Charming she doesn't want to wish for finally mend her shredded heart?


Inspiration:
The main inspiration for this fanfiction comes from a project that I started and abandoned (quite by accident) almost the night after I saw Star Trek. I'd just seen the TOS episode, The Naked Time, and a scene from Amok Time that deeply affected me. Christine Chapel was, despite being under the infulence of the Psi 2000 virus, completely honest with her feelings for Spock. Her confession was heart wrenching, and made even more so by Spock's response.
"I'm sorry. I am sorry."
In that one line, Spock says a million things at once. I cannot possibly attempt to translate what he meant in a way that would honor the writers of this episode, but I think in essence he was apologizing for his inability to return her very human emotions. And I think that he really did regret that he couldn't.
There is also something else that inspired me so much that I've been brave enough to step into the world of Star Trek fanfictions. A wonderful writer whom I respect a LOT for her ability to delve into the character and make them realistic has written a wonderful fanfiction that I highly suggest that my fellow Star Trek fans (if not all of you, even if you don't like Star Trek) read.
