*When she is a fairly young adult, Koyta ventures a bit further away from the foraging party than she should. She is set upon by a rogue, who tries to first mate with her (as he scents that she is in season), and then kill her when she fights back, having been wandering in the desert for quite some time. She is saved by her mentor, Rwanto, who guards her with his own body until she is recovered enough to fight with him.
**Rwanto and Koyta kill the rogue and drag the body back. Rwanto later tears out the heart of the rogue and presents it to Koyta in recompense for the atrocities done to her.
*Koyta's first mate goes mad from heat stroke during their first mating and attacks her mid-breeding, scarring her badly in the process.
**Again, it is Rwanto who comes to her aid when it seems her mate will deal the killing blow, but only long enough for her to briefly recover and kill her would-be mate in the process.
*Along the same vein of suffering deep emotional trauma, and being 'saved' by Rwanto, Koyta must defend her honor as heir apparent and prove her worth to the pride despite the unfortunate circumstances that befell her. She finds that despite both their scars leaving them at some small disadvantages, they are equally matched. She comes to love Rwanto, and takes him as her mate after the one time he bests her.

Suggestions for Rwanto:

*Rwanto is quite a bit older than Koyta, already a fully grown male by the time she is born, and serves as her 'mentor' of sorts. The two spar often, and in their own strange way, they hold a great deal of affection for one another that is in true Living Sand fashion: with a lot of physical combat and screaming.
*Rwanto intervenes to save Koyta's life only because of his fondness for her, not because he thinks her weak, although he doesn't ever defend her when others accuse her of that. It is up to Koyta to defend her honor, but for that one time, it was up to Rwanto to keep alive the only heir to the line.
*The only relationship that rivals Rwanto's with Koyta is the respect he holds for her parents. Rwanto is fiercely loyal to them, and everyone knows it, and knows to speak ill of the King and his Queen is to earn a sharp clout to the head from the huge lion, and then some.
